Sultan of Turkey is celebrating his dynasty’s 1000 years of reign(hegira). He commissioned a group of artist to prepare a book to celebrate his glory. Sultan wants the picture to be drawn in Venetian style (European renaissance, where portrait of person as completely real, use of Shadow and perspective, picture in 3D, contains blasphemy elements) as the Sultan wants to impress his Western relations, he wants the book to be illustrated in a modern and western way. A debate among artist takes place about what they have been preparing for Sultan, is it really blasphemy or not? Head illustrator Osman bypassed and project is given to Enisthe who has miniaturist Elegant, Sotrk, Olive and Butterfly. Consequently, two murdered happens, first an orthodox Elegant Efendi, later on unorthodox Enisthe by the colleagues, but murderer is not revealed until the end of the novel. The reasons of murdering are professional rivalry, passion of revenge and religious terror.
Black, nephew of Enisthe is given to investigate the case. He is also son-i- law of Enisthe too who recently married to his daughter Shekure who was technically married to a Calvary man who was missing for 4 year. The murderer is revealed as olive, In fights with Olive black slightly become handicapped, Black and Shekure lived together but not happily as they had expected. Both expressed their regression of getting marriage. The story ends by telling story to Orhan by his mother expecting him to write.
This novel deals with conflict of Islamic art with Frankesh Style, Venetian style. The novel shows how the issues of art can be cause of somebody’s murder in those 15th century time. It depicts the conflict of two civilizations in the world-east and west.
